Join our vastly experienced tour guide on this full day tour from your Cruise Ship in Tauranga, travelling through to Rotorua to view the truly amazing sights and sounds of Rotorua Thermal Wonderland, and then enjoy an intimate encounter with Maori culture in what is undoubtedly the spiritual home of Maoridom.
Leaving the Port of Tauranga, our journey takes us through the delightful seaside resort of Mt Maunganui, a favoured holiday destination for many New Zealanders.
We continue on to Te Puke which is referred to as the Kiwi Fruit Capital of New Zealand, and here we visit Kiwi 360, where we have the opportunity to sample some of the many Kiwi Fruit products and learn something of the history of this iconic New Zealand fruit which boasts so many health benefits, and for many people world wide, is the single thing they most readily associate with New Zealand.
Our route to Rotorua takes us through farmland and past vast forests of Pinus Radiata, a species of Pine tree which flourishes in the volcanic soil prevalent through vast areas of the central North Island. Largely because of its speed of growth Pinus Radiata has become a major export earner for the New Zealand economy, and as your cruise around New Zealand continues, the sight of massive stock piles of Pine logs on wharfs awaiting shipment will become a very familiar sight.
We travel on through the ever changingcountryside before stopping briefly to admire the dramatic Kaituna Rapids, and then continuing on past the magnificent Lakes; Rotoriti and Rotorua, just two of the sixteen lakes which colour the landscape of this fascinating volcanic plateau.
A short break for lunch (at own cost) at the waters edge of Lake Rotorua, almost in the heart of the City Centre, before journeying on to Whakarewarewa to experience the unique attractions of this Thermal Wonderland.
We take a tour of the various attractions of this unique thermal area, before visiting a living Maori village situated in the heart of this constantly active and ever changing geothermal environment, where the Maori families live with boiling thermal springs and hot bubbling mud pools as their neighbours. The area is also the home to the famous Pohutu Geyser.
Our visit will be hosted by a wonderful Maori guide who will explain how his people have come to live in harmony with this unique environment, and learn over a vast number of years how to harness the natural energy which the geothermal area provides in a very natural way for their energy requirements for cooking, bathing and day to day living.
The conclusion, and in so many ways the highlight of our Whakarewarewa visit is a "not to be missed" concert, where the local Maori residents perform a traditional welcome, and entertain with song and dance and conclude with their now famous war dance or Haka.
We drive through the City of Rotorua to the Government Gardens, and the famous Rotorua Bath House Museum, before commencing our return journey to Tauranga by an alternative route, stopping along the way to admire the crystal clear blue waters of Hamurana Springs.
When we arrive back in Tauranga there will be time for a quick look at the Central Business District before crossing the bridge and returning you to your Cruise Ship.
