Akaroa Cultural Triple Treat

This fully guided six hour tour features some of the most outstanding scenic beauty of the area, along with two unique attractions of Akaroa and Banks Peninsula.

The Journey

This beautiful and tranquil harbour and township of Akaroa are nestled in the crater of a long extinct volcano. Akaroa is the oldest Colonial town in the South Island and is still touched by the French influence of many of the early settlers.

Our journey takes us out of the township, climbing up to,and along the crater rim on the summit road, and then driving down to visit two of the beautifully idyllic Eastern Bays.

At the end of the tour we return to Akaroa and your Cruise Ship, along the waters edge for a very different appreciation of this dramatic scenic landscape.

Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum

We visit this fascinating Museum at the heart of historic Okains Bay, where you will enjoy a very relaxed environment as you learn something of life in this area, and New Zealand as a whole as it was in former times.

As our party walks onto the Museum grounds, we will be greeted with a powhiri (traditional Maori welcome) and be treated to waiata (Maori songs) and a haka (Maori war dance) followed by a hongi (Maori greeting by touching noses)  This is a very intimate "hands on" experience which will give you a true insight into some important aspects of Maori culture.

Significant taonga Maori, and early European items are among the exciting range of treasures on display in the Museum's diverse complex of heritage and Maori buildings, which include a Whakaata (meeting house) and Matuku Rangi (food storage house)

The Museum came about as the result of the passion, tireless energy and generosity of its founder, Murray Thacker. A long time resident and descendant of some of the earliest European settlers in Okains Bay, Murray purchased the former Okains Bay Cheese Factory and took many years developing his extensive private collection into the Museum, before gifting it into public ownership in 1977.

Since that time the Museum has grown to become a significant cultural and educational attraction which draws visitors from throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and the World.

Prior to concluding our visit, our hosts at the Museum will serve a delicious morning tea, before we move on to our next destination.

Fishermans Bay Garden

This New Zealand "Garden of significance", which can best be described as a Botanical Masterpiece, has been created by Jill Simpson and husband Richard, in the middle of a working farm, which includes 100 hectares of regenerating native bush in two coastal valleys.

Fishermans Bay Garden is a tranquil haven in the rugged and dramatic landscape of the Banks Peninsula coastline.

Sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean form the backdrop of this two hectare garden, which uses the sructure and texture of New Zealand native plants, combined with a diverse array of non - native plants to create a truly New Zealand Garden.

Winding paths and a varied landscape have inspired a garden with many parts, including a traditional flower border, herb garden, fern garden, a shaded stream side valley, a pond and a wild exposed rock garden.

An extensive variety of locally sourced native plant species, offer visitors a unique snapshot of the rich and varied plant life of Banks Peninsula.

Jill is also a keen collector of native Hebes, and her garden currently boasts more than 150 species and cultivars.

Even if you are an "ocasional gardener" with only a passing interest, we feel sure you will enjoy this amazing garden, the wonderful and dramatic vistas, and the warmth of the welcome of

your hosts, Richard annd Jill Simpson.
